Cricket and
Rugby Tours
The game of cricket has been played in Malta
for nearly 100 years; it was brought to the islands
by the British Services. Maltese cricket is played
at the Marsa Sports Club Oval. The facilities
are of a high standard and have been rated amongst
the best outside the UK. The pitch consists of
an artificial grass mat, laid on a concrete base,
with an automatic water sprinkler system to maintain
the grass outfield. The standard of play can best
be described as reasonable level. To date, teams
from Australia, Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, France,
Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Holland, Italy, Luxembourg,
Malaysia, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan,
Switzerland, UK and USA have toured in Malta.

The Malta Rugby Football Union was founded in
1990 and 6 teams participate in the local league
- Phoenicians RFC, Overseas RUFC, University RFC,
Kavallieri RFC, Stompers RFC and the Tripoli Barbarians.
These teams can compete with visitors from the
2nd and 3rd division [British league class]. Malta
became a member of the IRB in February 2000, and
consequently, a member of AER-FIRA, the European
body of rugby union. In 2001/2, Malta beat Bulgaria
and Monaco and drew with Norway to progress to
the European Championship Division 3 Pool B. In
2002/3, Malta have beaten Lithuania and Austria.
Through our contacts, we can easily arrange to
fit in matches for touring teams. The suggested
period for a tour in Malta would be between the
beginning of October and the end of May. With
a blend of good weather, friendly and welcoming
people, good food and cheap beer touring in Malta
is fun.
Football
and Swimming Training Camps
The Malta Football Association’s Technical
Complex offers visiting teams first class facilities
for training camps. Apart from a huge training
area – roughly the size of 3 football pitches
– this Technical Facility also offers, dressing
rooms with showers etc, state of the art Gymnasium,
and a physiotherapy clinic. Besides the normal
training schedules, the MFA Technical Facility
offers the possibility of friendly practice matches
according to the team’s wishes.
The National Swimming Pool situated at the University
Sports Complex in Tal-Qroqq, was constructed in
1993. It was the main venue for the V Games of
the Small States of Europe held in 1993 and also
of the 1st World Paralympics Swimming Championships
held in 1994.
To date it boasts of highly certified standards
in other sport facilities apart from swimming.
The pool is now available as a venue for club
/ group training camps. The 50-metre pool has
10 lanes and the adjacent diving pool offers an
additional 25-metre facility. The pool has changing
rooms and excellent viewing grandstands.
With temperatures varying between 15 and 20 degrees
and very little rainfall in the winter, Malta’s
climate is ideal for outdoor sports. Given the
extensive range of facilities available in Malta,
training camps for other disciplines such as athletics,
water polo, basketball and volleyball can also
be organised.
